As I scrolled through my notes, looked at the statistic and genre characteristics addressed int the previous post, many of the ideas and techniques I am looking to work with and incorporate correspond to adventure. Adventure films generally rely heavily on a heroic action-driven character(s) and a fast developing and perilous story line. This usually require a strong story line that takes the viewer, along with character, through intense action scenes as well as exotic locations and cultures. The perfect example is the Indian Jones Trilogy. Steven Spielberg uses all the elements necessary and explained previously (strong central character, fast paced story line paired with exotic locations and cultures, etc.) to create the adventure atmosphere the audience so dearly loves. These films are ones I decided to watch in my free time this weekend to further engulf myself in the genre and study different shot techniques, dialogues/writing skills, and character developing and creation. And if you haven't seen the Indian Jones movies shame on you! Watch them and enjoy the true definition of adventure.
Furthermore, the adventure genre seems somewhat like an intriguing challenge to me. After reading and watching a couple of blogs from film students delving into this genre (some of which have already made couple short adventure films), I learned that shots play an extremely important role in this genre. Adventure is a fast paced exciting genre and that should reflect in the shots and editing. Looking for the shots and working with the environment in which i will be filming has always sparked my imagination and I am looking forward to the many mistakes and challenges as well as the final product. Additionally, every genre has its gender tendencies which is an area that I will further look into in my next post.
